To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is the story of how Jem Finch broke his arm, although you may not realize it until the end of the novel. The story takes place in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, where gossip and racism reign. Black Tom Robinson is put on trial for the rape of white Mayella Ewell. Boo Radley has been inside his house for decades after stabbing his father in the leg. And Scout Finch, just a child, narrates the lovely story.
For teachers, this novel is a perfect example on how setting effects both plot and characterization. Of course, it is also filled with the racism and racist language of the time, so beware.
The first half of the book can be a bit slow, but the second half definitely makes up for it. To Kill a Mockingbird is a must read. 04.06.08
